Steller Blue Jay[edit]

Two Jays are building a nest in our deck umbrella here in Lake Tahoe.Should we allow this to happen?We would like to allow this for our entertainment but aren't sure if it is appropiate .Our questions of abandonment of the nest with our activities on the deck,the canopy above them,will it inhibit flying? Steller's Jay can mimic cats[edit]

I have been hearing what sounds like angry cats in the area lately. Once while I was outside I heard the sound nearby and it was coming from the trees. I looked up and saw a bluejay making vocalizations exactly like an angry cat. I have only witnessed the bird making the sound once but I often hear the sounds in the area and now I don't know if it is the bird again or an actual cat.

Can this information be added to the Steller's Jay section?

unidentified bird[edit]

Do you think the Steller Jay would come as far east and the Foothills of Western North Carolina? This spring we saw a beautiful blue bird darker than our Blue Birds and no variation on the breast. It had a crest which was blue also. No white. We have a lot of Blue Jays and understand that both the male & female are marked simular. If it hadn't had the crest it would have been about the color of a mountain blue bird. It was the most beautiful bird I think I have ever seen. map[edit]

The map is woefully inaccurate, especially in Middle America where it's shown as inhabiting lowland rainforest. I've deleted it. Natureguy1980 (talk) 19:01, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, the map is suspect. It implies the Stellar's jay is found in southern California including Baja California--I believe it is not. It also excludes the jay from the U.S. and Canadian Rockies, which is the bird's prime habitat. IL think we need a new map. 71.39.149.116 (talk) 00:14, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if anyone is still paying attention here, but I have removed the map as it is obviously wildly inaccurate and indeed contradicted the text of the article. I was dismayed to find that many other Wikipedias are using it, probably having just copied this article. Rather than learning a dozen new languages so I can explain to all of them that it is wrong I have nominated the file for deletion over at commons. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:52, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Question re: potentially abnormal nesting locations[edit]

We have a Steller's Jay that's built a nest in a rhododendron about 4 feet off the ground immediately outside the front door of my workplace which is adjacent to a large park in the middle of the city of Eugene, Oregon. According to the article, this bird prefers to nest in conifers or hollows in trees... is it typical for them to nest in something like a rhododendron so close to the ground, less than 2 feet from fairly regular foot traffic?

I would be happy to provide more details on the location as well as photographs if this would be beneficial to the article in any way. The male that built this nest has actually managed to attract a female and she appears to be sitting on a clutch of eggs of of 18 April 2014. Holly.kolo (talk) 17:34, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has a policy that disallows original research. I'd suggest contacting your branch of the Audubon society with your query. I looked briefly for a forum for amateur ornithologists. Inconsistency[edit]

I noticed that the size of the crest is described as both smaller and larger than the Blue Jay in the introduction. 1st paragraph: "While it does not have as prominent a crest as the Blue Jay (Cyanocitta crostata)..." and 2nd paragraph: "The Steller's jay has a more slender bill and longer legs than the blue jay and has a much more pronounced crest.". While one could argue the meaning of "prominent" and "pronounced", I think it confusing for the general reader. I'm not an expert on this topic, so will leave the correction up to someone who is.
