Academic career[edit]

The relatively long passage about Edzard Ernst and the Smallwood Report does not belong in a summary of Steve Smith's academic career. Is this appropriate under WP:NPOV ? Robmitchell4 (talk) 17:02, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This paragraph does appear to be lengthy in comparison to the rest of the information on Steve Smith's career. I also question if it belongs in a section on academic career as it isn't directly relevant to Steve Smith's academic work. J150vsc (talk) 13:04, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If it is felt this info is necessary in the overview of Steve Smith's academics career I suggest this edit:

In October 2002, he succeeded Geoffrey Holland as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter.^[1] When, under his Vice-Chancellorship Edzard Ernst was involved in a dispute with Prince Charles about the Smallwood Report into complementary medicine. After Ernst publically dissociated himself from the report he was investigated by the University. Ernst was "cleared of wrongdoing", ^[2] but has said the circumstances surrounding the investigation led to his early retirement.^[3] ^[4] J150vsc (talk) 13:25, 15 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the core of this is about how much of the Smallwood issue directly involved Steve Smith. That which didn't, other than a bare minimum to give an understandable context and a link to a more relevant article, should go. In particular, it's still not clear what involvement Steve Smith had, other than being in the V-C role, with this report, with Edzard Ernst, or with the investigation. As it is, I'm left wondering between him either having a greater role than is obvious here (or else why mention it at all), or him having no direct role other than being the big desk where the buck stops, in which case we might clarify "He led / Did not lead / Instigated / Set the terms of" the investigation.
