Pronunciation[edit]

Please give a phonetic pronunciation for Stourhead, as mentioned in the article. I have heard variations that cannot be correct.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 209.5.232.72 (talk • contribs) .

It is always pronounced s-tower-head - rhyming with flowerbed and derived from the name of the River Stour. I couldn't write that in IPA though. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 10:46, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have corrected the pronunciation. It should be /ˈstaʊərˌhɛd/ (not /ˈstɑːrhɛd/, which is what we had). The pronunciation /ˈstɑːrhɛd/ was supposedly based on an audio clip provided by the Oxford Learner's Dictionary; however, if one listens to it carefully one does hear /ˈstaʊərˌhɛd/. Hello. It's a very nice pic, but currently at 600px way too big since it crowds the text into a tiny column. I was thinking the house would probably be more appropriate in the top corner, and perhaps there are enough pics for a gallery further down the article, in addition to the current spread of pics. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 18:53, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its me again, the guy who posted the photo of the lake, I just did a quick cleanup over my mates, thats probably why my IP is different. Anyone think its better. Tidy up[edit]

Have given the article a light tidy. Added an infobox. Appreciate they don't appeal to all but I think they work well for sites such as this, enabling the inclusion of the listing details of some, but by no means all, of the most important buildings/structures. Have switched the lead image to one of the garden - this being more important than the house? Have removed the trivia section. Completely unreferenced, and mostly unimportant, except for the cited piece on the NT font which I've placed in the body. Have put the other pictures in the Gallery, which is, too?, large. Have changed the Architecture Importance rating to High, "Very important buildings and architects", which it is. KJP1 (talk) 08:11, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Focus on house or garden?[edit]

@KJP1:Thanks. I would agree that the garden/park/grounds of Stourhead are very notable. However, it is also an historic estate with a descent history long pre-dating the landscaping, waiting to be written. The article states "The Stourton family had lived at the Stourhead estate for 500 years", this is a very prominent family, which has little to do with the present gardens or house. So we need to find a way to have two articles, one about the landscaping, the other about all the families and manor houses (including the present one) which are connected with the estate. I don't even know what the historic name of this estate is, I think "Stourhead" is a fairly modern name. I would suggest "Stourhead Park" and "Manor of Stourhead" (or whatever the correct historic name is).Lobsterthermidor (talk) 19:03, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lobsterthermidor - Good to hear from you. I don’t think there’s any problem with an article on the family, and their possessions, and another on the estate. We ended up with something like that at The Hendre, a relatively important house, and the Rolls family, an arguably more important family. But at Stourhead, I think the position is reversed. The estate, including the house but it’s secondary, is more notable than the family, and the gardens are the most notable feature of all. As to what’s in a name, the NT call it Stourhead, [1], and HE call it Stourhead, [2]. I’ve not done a Google Search, but I’ll bet my own house that Stourhead has more hits than Stourhead Park or the Manor of Stourhead. On that basis, I’d struggle to see why Wikipedia would call it anything else. KJP1 (talk) 20:11, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
