Image of woman playing a sub–contrabass recorder[edit]

A few decades ago, the respected Dutch recorder maker Adriana (iirc!) Breukink made a sub contrabass recorder with a round cross–section, such as the one in the picture. Not long afterward, a memorable photo of her was published on the Web, showing her playing (outdoors!) the recorder she had made. She was barefoot, as I recall, and a later version of that photo had been cropped to hide her feet. Whether the woman in the photo is Ms. Breukink, I don't know; I don't recall the photo of her that well. Among recorder players, such recorders are awe– inspiring. It's possible that the one she made could be the only "round" one in existence, although a museum could halve one. Such low pitches require a lot of air flow (compare with pipe organs), and must require a very thin windway to permit notes of useful length to be played.
