Removed some awards[edit]

Per prior consensus category-wide, I removed non-notable and fan-run awards. Shinyang-i (talk) 03:14, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sunmi-pop[edit]

Hello, I am opening a new section due to a reverted edit made by an editor to the content I've added to Sunmi's page. Said revert was motivated by the editor's own personal opinion on the artist therefore I will be reverting it back. However, an experienced user suggested me to open a discussion on the talk page since I made a bold edit. In this section we can discuss about "Sunmi-pop". I will be gladly accepting advices and corrections. Please do not bring your own personal opinion on the artist as this is not a social media, and only correct Wikipedia related facts.

Sunmi-pop, as "ridiculous" it may sound, has now become the most popular term to describe Sunmi's music. It's been mentioned in 80% of the interviews related to her latest comeback "TAIL" and it has been recognized by multiple industry experts and other K-pop artists. It's all in the references. Sunmi's Wikipedia page without the Sunmi-pop section looks incomplete and only partially describes her career, therefore I think it's a fundamental addition.

Thank you. Union920502 (talk) 20:42, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This sounds more marketing term than anything with lasting significance. Who are these industry experts and are they providing in-depth, independent critical coverage? So far, all I see are normal press releases. She's not inventing a new genre of music here. Wikipedia is not just all the facts but it relies on editors to gain consensus on what is encyclopedic. I would agree with you if the term was invented by the company for marketing purposes, which was not. The term was born out of a need to differentiate Sunmi's music and performances which are objectively thematically, and artistically, diverse than what is being released in the K-pop scenery right now. It's not only press releases, even her own colleagues, meaning other K-pop artists, now refer to her music with that term. It's not a matter of opinions like if I was making it up on the spot and claiming it as true, it's just what's been happening in the industry and what has become common knowledge. And not writing about it makes this page simply incomplete. Of course with this being a new term you're not going to find detailed in depth reviews about it like with many of the new artists out there. I see the problem with claiming it as a new genre without academic research and publications, therefore I can word my edit better by calling it her "musical style" and referring to it as that. Keep in mind that in Korean some of the English terms they use tend to have a slight different meaning for them. For example they call "genre" what is known as musical style in academic music terminology, so in the translation that might come off as wrong and I apologize. I can also remove superfluous quotations and citations from press releases. As of the rest, I still think that anyone who wants to really get informed about Sunmi's career on Wikipedia, should know about her unique musical style. I agree with Evaders99 on how this sounds much more like a marketing term than an actual genre. I think that if this were to be included in the article then it should be emphasised that it is not a genre but instead is a term coined to describe Sunmi's musical style. Considering the amount of reliable sources who have published articles using the term "선미팝" I do understand that this may be relevant in terms of musical style, but not relevant as a genre, that is much too questionable in my opinion. That's okay. I do realize my terminology might have been wrong since the term "genre" is thrown around a lot in K-pop interviews, especially in Korean. If we all agree, I will change the terminology. Union920502 (talk) 19:09, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
