"Oddly enough, the superfluous man is also used to describe social and outgoing men in certain parts of the United States." Encyclopedia Britannica lists two other, and more positive, examples of "superfluous men": Myshkin in Dostoievski's THE IDIOT, and Pierre in WAR AND PEACE.CharlesTheBold (talk) 14:55, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
