Section merge request (Fisheries certification)[edit]

Some of the material in the section of this article on awareness campaigns should, in my opinion, be merged with related material in two other articles -- Sustainable seafood advisory lists and certification and Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing -- to produce one new article: Fisheries certification. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 23:37, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm unclear why you think this "should" happen? A summary section on "Awareness campaigns" belongs in this article, which is itself a summary article. A key standalone article in this area is Sustainable seafood. Sustainable seafood advisory lists and certification was earlier split from this article because of various issues. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing has a different focus. --Epipelagic (talk) 01:48, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The material seems duplicative: overlapping if not identical material in three places. I think it would be better to have one, consolidated article (or section). The sustainable seafood article is clearly related, but does not directly address fisheries certification. The strongest of the three currently is in the "Illegal..." article, but that's not the logical place for it, in my opinion. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 02:24, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't change your comments after I have replied to them. You have retrospectively qualified your first comment in such a way that my reply now seems unreasonable. It will very unpleasant trying to correspond with you if you are going to continue with that practice.
There are three somewhat separate areas here, and I think there should be three different articles reflecting that.
  • Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) is an international fisheries terms used by the FAO in the context of the international regulation of fisheries [1] as well as by legislators concerned with national fisheries enforcement. [2]. IUU is not specifically concerned with "sustainable fishing" as such, but rather with the factors that get in the way of effective enforcement, that is, the focus is on effective enforcement at national and international levels.
  • A second area concerns the certification of particular fisheries as conforming to sustainable fishing practices. The focus here is on specific fisheries, and whether they are operated in a sustainable manner. A specific fishery can be confined to a particular geographical area, and possibly just one species.
  • A third area concerns sustainable consumption. The consumer is the driving force of demand which in turn drives production. The focus here is on raising the awareness of consumers so demand can be more appropriately aligned with sustainability. Part of this is providing consumers with suitable information, such as which species are most at risk and which are least at risk so they they can source food from low risk species or certified fisheries. --Epipelagic (talk) 20:02, 6 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So, what about "Sustainable fishery"? The article doesnt cover much of that...[edit]

Hi all,

although the title of the article is "sustainable fishery", I am a bit disappointed that there is not much in the article about that at all..

75% is about "declining fish stocks" and paints a drama unfolding and a disaster waiting to happen or happening. Thats all fine, but I dearly miss anything substantial on what is actually being done about that. Thats what I expect to read in this article.

I am not the one to write on that here, I came here exactly to find out about it.

  • Well there's not much "actually being done" globally that could be described as substantial. Do you want the article to pretend things are rosier than they are? I suppose the article could refer readers to the works of Professor Pangloss, and could mention that some followers of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi believe the efforts they put into meditation are making everything okay. --Epipelagic (talk) 00:06, 9 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I dont understand your reply. My questions are sincere. Could the article at least try to explain what the currently accepted view on "sustainable fishery" is? Or, if that is not possible, explain why?
