Sources of other schtick material?[edit]

I don't normally watch the Svengoolie show but I saw the end of one episode. As Svengoolie is trying to sign off, talking to the camera / audience, there is a knock at the door. Svengoolie exits his (standing) coffin and goes to and opens the door. An arm only reaches in and moves around expressively while a gruff voice engages Svengoolie in humorous dialog leading to a punchline / joke. We never see any other part of the person at the door. This schtick is right out of Soupy Sales's old (1960s) TV show.

Soupy would be talking to the kids (camera) and there would be an interrupting knock at the door. Soupy would ask, "Who could that be?" and he would open his door and talk to the paw / hand / arm of Black Tooth the dog, White Fang the dog, and a cast of other characters, many played by Frank Nastasi using a gruff voice. They were often simple straight man comedy dialogs.

Has Svengoolie ever paid homage to the Soupy Sales Show as a childhood inspiration? Is it OK to add a reference to Soupy Sales in the Main Article? Straight man comedy surely predates Soupy Sales, but did anyone else use the "interrupt host talking to camera / audience; open door; ARM ONLY; straight man joke" schtick before Soupy? Will the really Boddy Sorrell shaddap![edit]

Might be worth noting ... "Boddy Sorrell" is a parody of "Buddy Sorrell", the character played by Morey Amsterdam on "The Dick Van Dyke Show", right down to the vocalization. It's also why "Boddy" constantly refers to Sven as "Rob" - Dick Van Dyke's character was "Rob Petrie". 75.107.41.198 (talk) 01:13, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
