swannanoa ---land of beauty[edit]

Just checking up on the old beauty. I spent many wonderful times there. I named my daughter Swanna after it and even wrote a song...Such magical gardens I hope that the statuary remains...I was fortunate enough to go upstairs on a video tour with Lao Russell over 30 years ago..

I live in Pass Christian, MS now and lost everything in Hurricane Karina and one of the places I daydreamed about moving back to was the Shenandoah valley....want to come see the place I tell everyone about it. Call the Inn at Afton (540-942-5201) to inquire about visiting Swannanoa. As of summer 2009, visitors can tour the grounds and first floor of the mansion, at a cost of $6/person, on the following open house weekends from 12-5PM: July 4-5, August 1-2, August 8-9, September 5-6, September 12-13, October 3-4, and November 7-8. Swannanoa's blueprints and other early documents are available for viewing at Maymont Park in Richmond, and a series of 90+ photos taken on a 2006 visit to the mansion is available on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/rigbymel/sets/72157594181586257/ --Oddharmonic (talk) 10:48, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Augusta or Nelson?[edit]

Various editors keep changing Swannanoa to be in Nelson County from Augusta County. Google Earth/Maps is kind of unhelpful, since the county lines are hard to discern. I believe it's more likely in Augusta County. Anyone know for sure? SchuminWeb (Talk) 03:56, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mapquest is the one to use to see county lines. Clicking on the coords in this article and selecting Mapquest, i find that it turns out Swannanoa is exactly on the county line. It is in both counties! And, this is confirmed by the National Register database listing for this property, which includes 2 records in the NRIS database...i believe because it is in two counties. The confirmation would be in the NRHP nomination document, which would be very clear about this.
