Swinton and Pendlebury[edit]

I'm removing "Swinton and Pendlebury" to just Swinton. Swinton and Pendlebury has it's own article, this one's for Swinton, AFAIK FileTrekker 16:47, 7 December 2006 (UTC)FileTrekker[reply]

Swynton = "Swine Town"[edit]

I've removed the part in which Swynton implies "Swine Town", as I believe this to be incorrect. Other wikipedia pages, e.g. Carshalton suggest the -ton part is "a farm which was in some way enclosed" rather than a rendition of "town". Can anyone shed any more light on this matter. Tun in Old English had several meanings, an enclosure, farmstead, hamlet, manor estate, and gave its name to the early settlements that grew to be villages and towns.J3Mrs (talk) 14:52, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ekwall, Place-names of Lancashire, gives 'Swinton is a common place-name. It no doubt means "farm where pigs are fed".' Mills, Dictionary of English place-names, gives 'pig farm'. Mr Stephen (talk) 18:29, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi many thanks to those who replied to the question I posted on the help desk, re Swinton and counties (30 September 2012). To reply:

Swinton is near Manchester but it is still in the historic county of Lancashire, as far as I am aware. If anybody else can help I would be grateful.
When we are talking about counties, to what extent did Swinton come "under Greater Manchester" as opposed to Lancashire, in 1974? What county is it now in?

Swinton is undoubtedly in the County Palatine of Lancaster. It has been in Lancashire since ever Lancashire was, though not under the County Council of that name; that "Lancashire" and "Greater Manchester" too exist only "for the administration of local government". As a local lad strolls down the streets of Swinton he's not administering anything. Nothing in any Act of Parliament has abolished nor changed ancient Lancashire nor any other historic county, so Swinton is Lancashire still. Notable people amendment[edit]

I have transferred the following two people from this page (Swinton) to Pendlebury.

Ryan Giggs did not live in Swinton. He grew up in Pendlebury (Beverley Road).

Tony Warren was not born in Swinton. He was born in Pendlebury (3 Wilton Avenue).

Some people wrongly assume Pendlebury (and also Clifton) is part of (a town called) 'Swinton' when in fact it is not. Pendlebury (and Clifton) is part of (a town called) 'Swinton and Pendlebury' (former municipal borough - 1934-1974). A great deal of this misapprehension stems from how Royal Mail have established their addressing layout for Clifton and Pendlebury. They show Clifton as "Clifton, Swinton" and Pendlebury as "Pendlebury, Swinton", both of which give the wrong impression I believe. IMO they should show these two districts without "Swinton" in the same way both Irlam (Irlam, Manchester) and Cadishead (Cadishead, Manchester) are under their M44 postcode. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.150.233.24 (talk) 13:11, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

St Peter's Church of England Primary School[edit]

"Swinton schools" in Pendlebury[edit]

Two schools were listed on this Swinton page which are actually in "Pendlebury". These were Mossfield Road Primary School and the Swinton High School, both of which have always been recorded as Pendlebury.

In fact Mossfield Road (Newtown, Pendlebury) was, up until the 1960s, known as Moss Lane (Newtown, Pendlebury).
