agreed -- should not be merged. "Symbolist" is often conflated as one who employs "symbolism," however, symbolism has a much richer literary history than just that.

I don't think it is confusing for the reader to be redirected from "symbolist" to "symbolism", they understand why they were redirected. For example, materialist redirects toward materialism and pragmatist toward pragmatism. In fact, I think, for consistency, as a general rule, 'ists' should be redirected to 'ism' pages unless the 'ist' is defined to study matters beyond or outside of the 'ism', of which I cannot think of any examples off hand.

Why not sign your posts, guys/gals... - "Symbolist" shouldnt be an article - we generally redirect derived occupations to their general field. Linguist --> Linguistics, etc. In rare cases where the role itself is notable then we use a separate article. In this case, making a disambig for from symbolism is more appropriate. The tough question - how to integrate symbolism with the symbol article? Maybe we need a template:symbolism? -St|eve 07:37, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
