Species' names[edit]

Catalog of Fishes currently (update of 19 May 2014) states:
"Synodontis is regarded as a feminine Greek noun by some, but masculine by others -- conclusion uncertain; see Schraml 2011:23 [ref. 31313]. However, it should be known that all early authors, such as Günther, Boulenger, Vaillant, Pellegrin, Poll, Vinciguerra, Pfeffer and Peters all treated Synodontis as masculine. Also the Code states that if a genus can be regarded as masculine or feminine, then it is to be treated as masculine. Therefore, we treat Synodontis as masculine, unlike Ferraris 2007": Synodontis (subgenus of Pimelodus) Cuvier, 1816
FishBase agrees. In the recognised species list 28 sp. epithets have been changed to their masculine form. Catalogue of Life and ITIS agree as well. XenoVon (talk) 14:30, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
