Definition[edit]
I think this definition is not correct. To my knowledge a syntrophy means the following:
"A biological relationship in which microorganisms of two different species or strains are mutually dependent on one another for nutritional requirements." (from the Free Dictionary).

I believe the definition in the dictionary is also not complete. Syntrophy works because two organisms, living very closely together create a thermodynamically feasible situation. The main example would be a secondary fermenter producing H2 gas which is very thermodynamically wasteful and a methanogen/acetogen which uses up this H2 gas for methanogenesis/acetogenesis. In this way, the equilibrium of the metabolism of the fermenter moves forward.--Jonthecheet (talk) 20:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Wording of the definition[edit]
