Edited the data box to show 4 or 5 DT machineguns: one each in the MG sub-turrets; one in a ball mount at the front of the main turret; one in a ball mount at the rear of the main turret = total four, minimum, in all models. Would be nice if that was elaborated in the article. I came here to say that it's not clear if the "4-5 guns" includes the pintle mounted gun, and whether one is the guns was coaxial or not. And this is the first comment I see. Idumea47b (talk) 00:29, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Machine guns[edit]

Hi, I noticed you changed the number of MGs for the Soviet T-28 tank. In the discussion page a while back I enumerated the MGs - one in each of the MG turrets, one in the main turret rear, one in a ball mount on the front of the main turret, making a total of four minimum. They often carried a fifth on the turret roof in the P40 AA mount. All my sources, including plans drawn by Zaloga in the book you cited, show this. Do you have something different? Hi. Sorry, I just noticed some inaccuracies and inconsistencies, and copied all of the stats from the table in Zaloga (1984:113) into the info-box, without looking at the discussion page. Zaloga lists 3×DT for the T-28 and 5×DT for the T-28E, although the drawing of the T-28 Model 1934 does show all five. There are no clues in the text, but one photo clearly shows a crewman manning the AA ring mount, while the photos of tanks in marshalling areas don't have the roof gun mounted—it's possible that a gun was mounted on the roof for travel in column, and replaced in the turret rear for assaults. Maybe the table is in error, or it lists the typical number of machine guns issued in the field, while the drawing shows all five mounted for clarity. Anyway, since there are five mounts, it makes sense to list 5×DT in the table. I'll update it. —Michael Z. 2006-05-15 13:46 Z

Turkish use[edit]

Questionable, this is mentioned as disputable in late-1990-ies Russian publications considering T-28 and in 2006 book T-28. Three-headed Stalin's monster by reknown in Russia armour historian Maxim Kolomietz states that foreign use of T-28 were limited by Finland (7 tanks), Germany (only 1 tank in single photo, no any other documents about this) and possibly Hungary (1 tank for training purposes). Yes, I've seen the reference to Zaloga, but in Kolomietz's book there is an explicit passage devoted to other operators rather than Soviet Union. This passage counts the states: Finland, Germany, possible Hungary and no any mentions to Turkey. AFAIK there are no Turkish photos of T-28 or statements from Turkish participants of project to their native country documents. Zaloga's book in general contains some factual errata so explicit confirm from Turkish side are needed IMHO. LostArtilleryman 16:44, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's quite possible that Zaloga is wrong, but so far there is no information that specifically makes it dubious. To bad he didn't footnote the book. I'll make the lack of support clear in the article.
It would be useful to find some other accounts of the general sale of tanks to Turkey, Russian, Turkish or from elsewhere. If they list all of the other armoured vehicles but not T-28s, then that could be considered contrary information. —Michael Z. 2007-07-21 02:16 Z

Spanish Civil War?[edit]

Pekka Kantakoski does not mention the T-28 and the Spanish Civil War in his otherwise excellent book on Soviet armour called Red Tanks. However, I don't find it unlikly. --MoRsE 20:17, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
