Hit the Stage Win

I don't really get why you guys want to write the success of taemin's hit the stage. Hit the stage is a variety show programme. His win was already mentioned in hit the stage's wikipedia page. I feel that it should not be written in taemin's page as the win is from a variety show. People watch the show to see who won, unlike chart rankings where everything is out in the internet. If all of you find it necessary, then I would have no problem backing down either. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Requiem II (talkcontribs) 02:26, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

There is no valid reason to not mention the win here, and it is more strange to not mention it. The show has already aired, and if someone wants to watch the show now without being spoiled they should avoid going on pages that might have spoilers. Random86 (talk) 02:44, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
Hello. I agree with Requiem II. It is a spoiler. If someone wants to watch the show now without being spoiled, I find that they should avoid going to HTS wikipedia. Taemin's wiki should try to avoid such variety show wins. Look at running man, the winners are all mentioned in the wiki page while on the individual guests' wiki, there are no mentions of winning or losing. I use running man as an example as it is a more good wiki page. Just giving my two cents on this matter even though I do feel that Requiem II has 0% chance of winning this argument as there are more people with more contributions.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucio4550 (talkcontribs) 09:05, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not spoiler free, there is actually a wikipedia page regarding why check it out. Anyway there is nothing else to mention besides the episode has aired already so I'm not sure why this is even a topic here. It's more than ok to add the information. --Thebestwinter (talk) 17:36, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

"one of the best-selling artists in Korea"

The second sentence of the lead's first paragraph says that Taemin, and I quote, "has since gone on to become one of the best-selling artists in Korea." I'm concerned about the accuracy of this statement. Is it referring to him as a solo artist, or is it saying that shinee went on to become one of the best-selling artists in the country? If it's the latter, that statement should be worded differently. Because it kind of does give the impression that as a solo artist he's one of the best-selling artists in Korea, which from his discography page alone it's very clear that he is not. Also there's no source to support that statement in either the lead or the body of the article. -- Carlobunnie (talk) 03:59, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Carlobunnie, the lead in general needs some clean-up, but while his number of album sales may seem to show very clear that he is not, as South Korean solo artists tend to have lower sales compared to South Korean groups, he actually is among top-selling Korean soloists, in years he has released solo work anyway. However, I think this is a harder claim to source, and I think it would reflect his popularity in South Korea better if this line was replaced with something along the lines of "has been called the "Idol's Idol" " as this would be a much easier claim to source, and would reflect what is notable about him, both in Shinee and as a soloist. Nangears (talk) 04:40, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
Nangears if he is usually amongst the best-selling soloists of the year in the years that he releases an album or ep then it needs to be stated in those sections in the body of the article, 2016, 2018, 2019 etc. If he is considered a best-selling soloist overall (as per what was in the lead) since he began his solo career then we also need a source proving how this is so (something that shows how his sales stack up against other soloists). I wasn't mentioning his sales in comparison to group sales; where soloists are mentioned in the Gaon articles on WP I've seen IU and others but not his name that's why I said that. Idk what an "idols idol" means but if it's related to his impact/influence and enough material can be found for a like-named section then that could be mentioned+expanded upon there and then included in the lead. -- Carlobunnie (talk) 18:02, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Requested move 30 May 2021

Lee Tae-minTaemin – Taemin is referred to by only his first name in English speaking media. In Korean media, he's referred to as "Lee Taemin", "Taemin of Shinee" or "TAEMIN" (stylized) but this is irrelevant on English Wikipedia. Other Korean idol soloists also have their pages under their mononym, e.g. Sunmi, Taeyeon, Baekhyun. There are other people with the given name Taemin on English Wikipedia, but there are also several articles about people named Taeyeon and Sunmi and a Tae-min_(name) disambiguation page already exists. The page "Taemin" also currently redirects to "Lee Tae-min". 3a4t (talk) 11:21, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

  • Support It's obvious how he's always addressed by his mononym for his solo career: The Ringer[1], Forbes[2], Billoboard[3], Teen Vogue[4], etc. Even in other countries, like Japan, he is listed as Taemin instead of Lee Tae-min. Even though the name Tae-min is pretty common in South Korea, there's no other people in the industry using Taemin as their stage name (as you can see on Tae-min_(name)). There are less people having the same name as him in the industry compared to people above who have managed to use their mononym on English Wikipedia, especially Taeyeon and Jimin. Additionally, he has been known and worked as soloist with the name Taemin longer than people mentioned above. So, really, I think it makes more sense to use Taemin. And if the reasons above are still not enough and the page eventually won't be renamed, I still believe it's better to use "Taemin" to address him on the page, just like with Kim Jong-hyun. Yolo4A4Lo (talk) 14:19, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Support He is far better known by his mononym than by his full name. Nearly all the sources used in this article refer to him exclusively as Taemin, and therefore, that should be reflected in the article itself. You would be hard-pressed to find many news sources that refer to him by his full name. The redirect from "Taemin" to this article would suggest that he is the best-known person with this name in any case. Artemisia (talk) 22:08, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose per WP:MONONYM - his name is not a pseudonym and last name is known and used fairly often. Evaders99 (talk) 01:36, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Oppose. South China Morning Post gives him as "Lee Tae-min, also known as Taemin"; Rolling Stone calls him "Lee Tae-min," and The Korea Herald says "Lee Tae-min of SHINee." Yes, I am sure his fans use the nickname. It is common for a Korean idol to be called something like "[band]'s [given name]," in this case "SHINee's Taemin." That's not really equivalent to a mononym. We should follow WP:Naming conventions (Korean). 99to99 (talk) 08:53, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Support Most sources within his article, if not all, identify him as SHINEE's Taemin or just singularity as Taemin. For Korean idols who are primarily known by their mononyms, their pages are often titled accordingly - examples include Sunmi, Jungkook, Taeyeon, Daesung, among others. On his label's official website, it displays his single name. official website Btspurplegalaxy (talk) 05:47, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Profile Photo

I've changed the photo to one where Taemin is smiling and updated with his most recent look. Can we keep it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unravelingsky (talkcontribs) 00:46, July 28, 2021 (UTC)

Please follow Image use policy before using an image. Lots of photos on the Internet are copyrighted and Wikipedia is not allowed to use them without a compatible license. Evaders99 (talk) 00:51, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
@Unravelingsky: The photo doesn't need to be changed every time he changes his hairstyle. The image you uploaded also has a problem: you are claiming the image to be your own work, however I believe it is actually a screenshot from a YouTube video and not your own work. Alex (talk) 00:52, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
@Alexanderlee: I was unaware I wasn't allowed to use my own screenshots since the other members of SHINee have this as their profile photo as well. Is there a photo we can change it to where he looks happier and not so miserable or confused?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Unravelingsky (talkcontribs) 00:58, July 28, 2021 (UTC)
@Unravelingsky: Unless you took the image yourself, you cannot claim it as your own work. Although you took the screen shot, you were not the person who took the video therefore it is not your work. Images need to be available under a free lisence to be used on Wikipedia. I don't really think there is anything wrong with the current image though; he's easily recognisable, we have a clear view of his face. He doesn't look "miserable or confused" to me. Also, please remember to sign your talk page comments with four tidles (~~~~) as this let's other editors know who has written what. Alex (talk) 01:05, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
@Alexanderlee: Understood, and apologies! Are any of the images searchable on Wikimedia Commons free to use? If not, I can get permissions from a fansite who photographed him to use one of their images if that's allowed? Unravelingsky (talk) 01:21, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
@Alexanderlee: I looked up the original YouTube video and it was uploaded with a CC license here. The current photo that is being used is under the same license from a Korea Dispatch video. Can we reconsider the change? Unravelingsky (talk) 02:25, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
@Unravelingsky: This one is fine since it's attributed to the actual source under CC license. It's also clear and easily recognizable. Pichipichi8 (talk) 06:18, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
@Pichipichi8: Thanks! It's been edited. I appreciate it! Unravelingsky (talk)
Can we please consider changing the profile photo to this photo which is under the CC license from YouTube? I'd appreciate it! Thank you. Unravelingsky (talk) 02:42, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

First name vs surname

I understand the decision was made to switch from first name to surname due to the guidelines described at MOS:SURNAME; however, MOS:SURNAME does make an exception for people who are referred to exclusively by their mononym. I believe this is applicable in this case. Checking the sources provided for this article will show that Taemin is never referred to by his full name. Furthermore, other K-pop idols who are known exclusively by their mononyms (which is most of them) are also referred to as such in their respective articles, e.g. Sunmi, Taeyeon etc. I think therefore an argument could be made for switching it back. Artemisia (talk) 21:34, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

I agree. Beyoncé is referred to as Beyoncé in her Wikipedia page not with her last name. The artist’s official profile everywhere refers to him as TAEMIN (his mononym). Please allow this change or if you don’t then go change Beyoncé’s page to call her Knowles all over. AceTaem (talk) 23:47, 5 August 2021 (UTC)
@AceTeam: There's a difference here, though. The article title for Beyoncé, Taeyeon and Sunmi all use their mononym for the article title. This article uses Lee Tae-min. Alex (talk) 00:44, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

@Alex: Is the title the issue here? Because there’s not a separate page about “TAEMIN”. Would you suggest changing the title of the article so that he can be referred to as the name he and his agency prefer and the entire world knows him by? If you think that’s the better solution, it’s actually the easier fix. AceTaem (talk) 02:42, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

@AceTeam: A page move has already been suggested (literally the thread below this one) and there was no consensus to move the page to that title. (BTW, if you want to ping me in your reply so I am notified of it, you can use {{reply|USERNAME}}, so for example to ping me would be {{reply|Alexanderlee}}, just be sure to sign your comment in the same edit or the notification won’t work) Alex (talk) 07:30, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
@Alexanderlee: How do we go about getting another discussion to have it moved? Btspurplegalaxy (talk) 00:06, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
@Btspurplegalaxy: someone would have to open a move request explaining why they think the article should be moved. Wikipedia:Requested moves/Controversial explains how to do this if you’d like to read through that. Alex (talk) 07:39, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Photo changes

I'm requesting a change of his photos as current one is inappropriate. It's a screenshot thats strongly edited with Remini, know to be making photos look fake. I believe this is not any fan account site and he should look official and more serious as this the page thats shown as first when you type his name and it should look captivating not cute. I dont understand how current photo was accepted to be honest. I'm requesting change to photo from Seoul Fashion Week. You can clearly see his face and recognise unlike right now which is most important. It's in wikicomms history so i believe there is no problem with copyright — Preceding unsigned comment added by Forshinee (talkcontribs) 16:13, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Looking at the image and the source video where it was taken from, I don't see how it could have been edited. Could you please explain why you think it has been edited? Otherwise, I believe it's best to use the most recent reviewed image in Commons, as to better reflect his most recent public appearance. ViSampaio (talk) 16:58, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
First of all this photo is not easily recognisable and im saying this because my friend did not recognise him even thought they saw many photos of his.
It is edited because no matter how you will take the screenshot it wont turn out in this quality. The filter made his wrinkles look stronger and thats what made be sure that it is edited. If you will goggle Remini edits you can see that the style of the photo is the same as theirs.
Even though it is his most recent one in Commons i strongly stand with with my and not only honestly because many fans of his agree that this inappropriate. Like I said firstly this an edited screenshot second of all since this a page that shows up as first when you google Lee Taemin i believe he should look serious, recognisable and official because currently it looks like a fan site. That's why I believe its better to use older but better photo than a one like this. Forshinee (talk) 18:01, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Well, your friend's ability to recognize Taemin is not enough basis. I agree that his wrinkles are stronger than they appear in the video, and there is some background noise that indicates some edits to increase the sharpness, but it's not in any way a photo manipulation made in bad faith. MOS:IMAGEQUALITY suggests to use the best quality image available, and other 2021 images in Commons are blurrier or contain another person, so I would vote to maintain this one.
This is a biography of a living person, the profile photo should portray the subject as he was on his most recent public appearance that we have available with the correct licensing. If you can find an alternative image of the same year or more current, I support you bringing it to discussion, but using an older one just because it looks better is something more fit for a fan site than Wikipedia. ViSampaio (talk) 19:39, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
As i said some fans of his agree that this should not be his profile photo and even though of course it was not edited with bad faith its not okay to use it here? He doesn't even have that strong wrinkles if you compare his other photos with this its almost a complete different person.
As well as just because its in the best quality is not making it be okay to be used here.
I understand what you mean and i would agree that it should more current one if it would be different photo so i stand with not accepting this as his profile because of how its edited.
In my opinion its better to use older but actual photo that shows how he looks like than edited. Forshinee (talk) 21:32, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
out of all posted in 2021 this one should be used if it has to be recent one
File:Shinee Taemin Marie Claire 2021.png
He looks most accurate and recognisable. Its not in a bad quality either just not as good as the screenshot one thats in this quality only because it was edited Forshinee (talk) 21:44, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
@ViSampaio @Forshinee: I think as middle ground, we can use this one. The crop is decent enough to show him alone. He's not showing "extreme" expression that makes him unrecognizable to some like in the current photo, and the one forshinee suggested is too gloomy. Just needs a little sharpening? Yolo4A4Lo (talk) 01:12, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
i agree that on photo ive suggested he looks gloomy but i think its in a better quality than yours. 2A00:F41:2C95:3172:9C16:6DF1:D16A:2974 (talk) 14:05, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

I want to change photo " Lee at the showcase for his first full album Press It in May 2016". Even though it is from his showcase it's from a showcase in Taiwan that happened 5 months after the album release and his look completely changed at that time he was already preparing for another single so his hairstyle and colour is for another comeback. The photo ive changed to is more accurate in my opinion as it was made 3 days after Press It release and his look is more accurate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Forshinee (talkcontribs) 16:27, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

There isn't anything wrong with how the current image is. It doesn't need to go back to being an older image, as it would be very outdated. Btspurplegalaxy 🗩 🖉 17:59, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
are you kidding me? first of all its just 5 months older than the current one and second of all it's more accurate since it shows up under press it' he should look like from that era.
Let me repeat I'm not talking about profile picture but the one that shows up under showcase press it
Current one is outdated since his look changed which makes his look outdated and we can make it accurate by choosing the one from a fansign. Forshinee (talk) 18:05, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
You don't update those images. They stay near the section with the year the image was taken. There's no reason to change it. Btspurplegalaxy 🗩 🖉 18:27, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
As I said there is. They are not accurate. Like I explained his look is outdated. There is a chance to make it accurate and look real by changing it.
He doesn't look like he is promoting the album because of the look and even thought he was i stand by changing it to a photo that was taken around the time the album was released to make it accurate, I dont know whats the problem? It literally wont hurt you to agree when I'm right.
Can someone else than u go through my request please... its like talking to the wall with you. Forshinee (talk) 18:41, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
If you can get an image from 2016 then I'll change it, if not then it won't be changed. Btspurplegalaxy 🗩 🖉 18:49, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
yeah i literally offered one :) the one u said its outdated...

ive sent you a photo from 2016 whats the problem now? why cant you change it Forshinee (talk) 14:06, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
You just keep making new reasons without any sense Forshinee (talk) 18:43, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
You need a consensus to change the image, and you currently don't have such a consensus. If you can find a better photo from 2016 that is properly licensed, you can propose it on the talk page. OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:56, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
How can i have consensus when its just this person making problems up.
I tried changing to this photo
File:Taemin at a fansign at IFC Mall in February 2016 02.jpg
because it was taken 3 days after the album release so its the most accurate looking photo for Press it
Ive explained everything before and i dont understand why its a problem to agree Forshinee (talk) 21:39, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

The argument against the move "his name is not a pseudonym and last name is known and used fairly often." is kind of .. interesting, as we have a lot of mononyms that are not pseudonyms... Beyoncé is one example, but there's Aaliyah, Adele, Anastacia, RuPaul, Shakira.... and they are not different from Taemin in any ways ... Seems like the disctinction is based simply on Taemin not being "famous enough" for some editors....
