extent of historic district[edit]

Extends as far north along Route 97 to just beyond C Street (including all of 3rd Street); as far south along Route 97 to Maennerchor Avenue; southwest to Pratte Avenue; west to hunters Avenue; east to Shetucket River (north of Route 169 bridge). --Polaron | Talk 14:48, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for opening a discussion section here. I note you put a location description into the NRHP infobox, as "Route 97 and Route 169 in Norwich, Connecticut". That's apparently not exactly the location field available in NRIS, which instead is "N of Norwich at CT 93 and CT 97, Norwich" (per the NRHP.COM page here). I am not opposed to editing/clarifying NRIS location descriptions in general, if you are knowledgeable and can do better. I assume that a route once numbered 93 is now numbered 169. But here, does the new language suggest it covers the length of those highways throughout Norwich? The NRIS location description suggests it is basically just around the intersection. And, your additional more detailed information provided above is based on what? I presume it is based on your comparing the small set of UTM coords given in NRIS to a modern google or other map view. This approach can give an approximate idea of the extent of a district, but as discussed elsewhere the selected UTM coordinates are too few to support making a map of the district that is accurate at a detailed level. It misses specific exclusions of properties that are modern intrusions or where owners objected, so statements like "all of a given street is included", if based on just UTM coords, should be avoided. Also older coordinates in NRIS for CT can be shifted off by a hundred yards or so, due to the 1985 datum coordinates change; the Taftville listing was in 1978. Please do clarify what is your source of above information. There is information about the Taftville historic district on page 11 of this state of Connecticut document. That document says that "the densely populated Taftville section of Norwich" is an NRHP HD, suggesting that Taftville is the HD. It also has a short NRIS-like description of the HD's resources. There is a map of Norwich historic districts on page 41 of this state planning report about Norwich. Page 48 describes the "Taftville/Occum" planning district as being characterized by the remnants of mill villages built in the 1800s along rivers. It says they are "very distinct neighborhoods" that consist of "typical mill housing and what is left of neighborhood business districts." Page 51 says that Taftville and Occum are 18th century mill villages that are still "self-contained communities with a variety of land uses." A "Taftville" "economic opportunity area" is labeled on a map on page 67; that area does not correspond very closely to the HD shown on page 41 (it looks like the econ oppty area was defined by a highway). Also, this newspaper article does not discuss geography, but it has some very interesting info about Taftville. --Orlady (talk) 16:58, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
