Introduction[edit]

Why is there a whole paragraph at the start about whether Taiwan is a country? How is that even remotely relevant?124.218.24.103 (talk) 08:45, 30 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It was put there because "Taiwanese Australians" is linked into the "Asian Australians" template/category and is variously classified as a distinct nationality or as a sub-nationality of the Chinese. Chinese Australians are a major ethnic minority group, hence the status of Taiwanese Australians is fairly prominent in Australia. Historically, the first Taiwanese Australians carried Japanese nationality, so the history of Taiwan is also fairly important here as well. Jargo Nautilus (talk) 09:28, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I should add that given that the earliest Taiwanese Australains were Japanese, this means that they were considered a sub-nationlity of the Japanese at the time. So, in the context of the 1940s, the Taiwanese would be listed under the Japanese in the aforementioned template, rather than under the Chinese, as is the case in the modern day. Resolution[edit]

I've removed the entire section just now. I was the person who originally added that paragraph a long time ago; nobody has challenged it between then and your comment from a few months ago. This article is relatively low-traffic. I think the info is mildly relevant but certainly not fundamental to the main topic of this article. Jargo Nautilus (talk) 14:32, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
