You can find the evidence in literature as in 'Whakatohea' by A.C. Lyall, or, 'Opotiki Mai Tawhiti' by Professor Ranginui Walker. For manuscript see the 'Opotiki Maori Land Court Minute Books'. You will find that the members of this tribe were wrongfully blamed and forcefully removed from their lands, into what was then termed as a 'Reservation'. The only way out of the reservation was to head to the Maori Land Court and assign delegates from your sub- tribe/ clan group to legally present your association with that land. All confiscated land was either used as infrastructure for the province or given to the soldiers for their part in usurping the tribe. Over one hundred years later (199?) the New Zeland government formally apologised for their mis-judgement. All Hapu (sub-tribes) now reside within the small amount of land they were able to reclaim from the Maori Land Court.
