Acceptable External Links

The zealous (some might say overzealous) "ohnoitsjamie" has taken it upon himself to be the gatekeeper of this page. One of his edits was to remove all the external links. The only way they can go back again and stay there is if there is consensus as to their suitability. The links he removed are below. Please discuss and come to a decision. I certainly agree that some of the links should be removed, but many should stay because they go to sites that assist students and practitioners of technical writing. <<stale links redacted, see history>> --Hattrick (talk) 23:55, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

COMMENT: Since no one has commented on my comment above, I have added (and subtracted) links in the External Links section. If you remove a link, could you please use this page to explain your reasons for doing so? I think the External Links section now provides links to information that is useful to tech writers, beyond what is provided in this Wikipedia topic. If you disagree with my choices, please discuss rather than high-handedly removing them. Once we agree on the links (and agreement ought to be the goal), is there a way to 1) lock the section and 2) provide a means for people to request that a site be added to the External Links section? I've added back links to tech comm communities. Those are helpful to folks in the profession, like such are to anyone in any profession. I did keep out the ones that kept their info behind a registration page, and so on. Silverstarseven (talk) 12:29, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

WP:ELNO is pretty clear: we don't link to community sites, forums, listservs and so on. 'helpful to folks in the profession' is not a criteria for inclusion. - MrOllie (talk) 14:03, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

I just updated TechWhirl's (TECHWR-L)'s links because we renamed the company earlier in the year. Ol' ohnoitsjamie dinged my update so I finally looked here. I'm curious on what constitutes SPAM versus non-Spam since this list is a good one. The fact that I'm a) the owner of TechWhirl b) the site has been in existence since 1993 wasn't good enough for ohnoitsjamie. Oh well. With over 300,000 email archives to search through TechWhirl is a great resource for technical writers. Thanks for adding us to this list. Almartine (talk) 22:22, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

The fact that you're the owner of the site constitutes a clear conflict of interest, and violates WP:EL. If you continue to add the site, you will be blocked indefinitely. OhNoitsJamie ^Talk 23:32, 19 December 2011 (UTC)
