Of some use would be a definitive comment on exactly how many digits are possible in a German telephone number. The article states that 10 or 11 is the standard, but some older numbers are shorter. How much shorter? I am having a heck of a time finding out. If I do get some sort of source material, I'll put it up, of course, but I bet there are native German that could find out much faster than I.

Well, that is hard to answer. If you take into account the switchboard codes, the shortest I know are 6 digit: E.g. the german Bundestag: +49 30 227-0, the city of Bielefeld: +49 521 51-0. The extensions then have 5 resp. 4 digits, e.g. +49 521 51 6997 being the central telefax extension. The shortest "normal" number should have 7 digits. Btw- also longer numbers than 11 digits in total exist in such systems, e.g. if a company expands and wants to keep the first part of the numbers. The longest I have seen was a total of 13 digits (not counting the 0, as above). These numbers are not directly assigned to customers. Wiesecke (talk) 19:14, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The shortest number in Germany I know is the switchboard of the rehab hospital on the island of Föhr. It is +49 4683 6-0 (4 area code + 2 for the switchboard) http://www.kliniken.de/kliniksuche/DisplayKrankenhaus.jsp?choice=2381 Private households can have three digit numbers in small places, giving seven in total. The longest number is 11 digits, but they try to establish a maximum of 10.(89.204.136.55 (talk) 23:25, 13 November 2011 (UTC)).[reply]
