Vetinari[edit]

It may be worth noting in the differences section that in the film version vetinari is the patrician, whereas in the book he is not. I haven't made the edit because I know there is some argument between fans as to when he came into power (some people seem to think CoM is based chronologically further on in the series). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.13.70.210 (talk) 23:04, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is he listed in the cast list as Vertinari? IMDB has him as Patrician.Halbared (talk) 23:22, 30 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Closely[edit]

"The plot of the adaptation closely follows the plot of the first two Discworld novels". I removed the "closely" in there since several parts of book one (at least) were skipped. However, the production did cover the main storyline. It's debatable whether closely should be used or not. --91.84.69.180 (talk) 22:56, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that parts were skipped, but they were the sub-plots. Perhaps "closely follows the main plot of the first two Discworld novels" would be better. --JD554 (talk) 06:04, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Herrena or Herenna or Herenna, but not Herrena[edit]

The article is inconsistent in its spelling of the character Herrena. Four instances spell it Herenna and one Herrena. However, the official site and IMDB agree with the single instance spelling of Herrena. Complicating things, an unpiped wikilink for Herrena goes to a subject completely unrelated to the character (i.e. simple search and replace isn't a good idea), while the currently used wikilinked Herenna redirects to a list of Discworld characters which uses yet a third spelling variation, Herena. Not sure how best to work this out, although since the official site uses Herrena it should probably be the preferred spelling in the article. -- Michael Devore (talk) 16:58, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Standardised as "Herrena", per the sources. Now I just need to chase that inconsistency through the rest of WikiProject Discworld's articles :D Happymelon 20:53, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit[edit]

Could someone see their way clear to editing the Reception section with some proper formatting as I added the 'fans opinion' information but don't know how to correctly format for bullet points which I used in word. Thank you.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Siolis (talkcontribs) 01:14, 28 April 2008

I've removed this whole "Opinion of the Fans" section as it is purely personal opinion without any verifiable reliable sources. I'd be happy for it to be re-added provided it can be properly cited to reliable sources. --JD554 (talk) 07:58, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly the entire edit was based on comparison information between the book and the TV-film, secondly it was (in a very small part) referenced from information collected from various reviews I have read, thirdly I am a fan and most of what was written was my personal POV backed up with evidence such as direct book to film references. You had no right to remove that based on those reasons. Please replace the information or provide pointers to where the information cannot be said to be fact derived from analysis of the source material. - Ollie Miles @ Siolisdeoden@yahoo.co.uk—Preceding unsigned comment added by Siolis (talkcontribs) 11:53, 28 April 2008
Yes I did have the right to remove what you added. Please read the following links: WP:CITE, WP:V, WP:RS and WP:POV.--JD554 (talk) 11:44, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I fully agree with JD554's removal; the most important shortcut I would ask you to follow is WP:SYN. Happymelon 14:19, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA review[edit]

The GA review of this article is currently taking place at /GA1, and is transcluded below.

GA review 1[edit]

  • "produced by The Mob for Sky One" - I've no idea what either of these are...I can guess what The Mob is by the word "produced" but what's Sky One? (Yes, I can click wlinks, but it should be made clear by the prose) dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "and Christopher Lee as the voice of Death" - why is his character noted but not anyone else's? dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • It's because his is a voice-only character, to preclude "but I didn't see him anywhere in the film" complaints. Unnecessary? Happymelon 20:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "with the second part attracting an average of 967,000 viewers and peaking at 1.1 million." - not sure how this works considering it was a one-off showing... dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • It means that it varied over the course of the screening - probably 1.1million at the start and trailing off slightly when Neighbours came on on the other side :D. Does this need to be made clear? Happymelon 20:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "After the success of Hogfather, it "wasn't hard to persuade Pratchett to sign over the rights" for The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic" - says who? dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Er, the author of the reference at the end of the sentence :D. Happymelon 20:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Not all readers check the references, it's best to have this stuff included in the prose. dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 23:23, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • It's not like the quote was even important - I've reworded it as prose. Happymelon 15:43, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Vadim Jean was employed to adapt the two literary works into a three-hour, two-part screenplay. While Pratchett was given "carte blanche" to "turn up whenever [he] wanted",[4] Pratchett was happy to see a more liberal interpretation of his first two works than he had been for Hogfather." - This reads very awkwardly...please copyedit a bit... (overuse of Pratchett for a start...) dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • One of the Pratchetts needs to go (done), not sure how best to rephrase it. Any suggestions? Happymelon 20:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • ""there is not so much emotional baggage, from my point of view, riding on The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic. It was just this book of mine that suddenly started selling incredibly well"" - this quote needs some introduction...or something... dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd put the plot summary before the production info so there's more context for stuff like "for the interior scenes of the Wyrmberg" (etc. etc.)...thoughts? dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "we can imagine that the wizard is at most 40 years old, so Jason could hardly be suitable for the role." - sounds very ORish dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The reception section...seems very small... dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I swear that's shrunk :D. Unfortunately this was a fairly small-scale production, so it just wasn't covered in many reputable sources. See this oldid for an example of how not to bulk it up :D Happymelon 20:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And leave me a note when done so I can take another look. Cheers, dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 08:09, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thank god for that - I was starting to think I'd been added to a secret GAC blacklist and everyone was actively avoiding my nominations! </paranoia> :D I'll get to work. Happymelon 09:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For outing the secret list, I'm going to have to add you to it! dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 09:24, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a good go through and dealt with most of the points you've raised. Any more to add? Happymelon 20:53, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please leave a note on my talk page when you're done with these comments. Cheers, dihydrogen monoxide (H2O) 01:29, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Differences between book and movie semi-error[edit]

In the Differences Between Film and Original Text (that's not the exact wording) it states that in that the film does not use a change spell to return Rincewind to the disk. However, it is this change spell that causes the turtle to roll to recapture Rincewind. (The Archchancelor even says "It's a Change Spell.") I think that could be made more clear. --174.19.97.175 (talk) 03:17, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rincewind's age[edit]

I notice that in the 'Reception' section, Rincewind is described as being middle-aged. However, the only specific reference to his age in the books is his alt-universe persona, Dr Rjinswand, from 'The Colour of Magic', which describes him as 33 - hardly middle-aged! Is there any firm evidence for the middle-aged description? I can't access the 'Times' article given as a reference because it requires a password. 188.29.70.222 (talk) 10:44, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It says he spent 40 years studying magic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.21.58.83 (talk) 21:30, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This 2008 addition has multiple unsourced claims and, quite possibly, original research. Spinixster (chat!) 02:56, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
