Accuracy[edit]
Everything I always read about the harvesting of burls from this tree has said that harvesting the does not injure the tree. It's similar to cutting off a branch. This article does not cite any sources indicating the basis for this statement that harvesting burls kills the tree, and it is contrary to what woodworkers have to say about the burl.
If indeed damage is done, is it because of improper harvesting techniques? Over-aggressive harvesting of burl wood from a single tree? Is it possible that better procedures can preserve the tree, and make harvesting sustainable? I am sure that even if trees are dying from this that there is a line where responsible harvesting will cause no lasting damage.
I am going to challenge the accuracy of the article as a result, this kind of information needs to be substantiated because it is possibly politically motivated, and it is in the interest of everyone who uses this wood to know whether or not it kills the tree or allows the tree to live, and if it is indeed killing these trees, getting the knowledge out there properly might allow for people who care about this wood and using it as well as preserving biodiversity, to act appropriately. burr vs. burl?[edit]
Someone recently changed "burl" to "burr" everywhere on this page. I haven't bothered to look at who. From what I see online, "burl" seems to be the more accepted term, unless "burr" is used in a distinct sense here. "Burr" is some places described as a misspelling of "burl".
