The references in the article currently are poor. However, I think there is some evidence that more / better sources exist:

there seem to have been at least two technical journal articles written about the smelter: [1] [2]
This NOAA article has some more information about the site following the closure of the plant [3]
The current reference [4] has a link to a nontrivial bibliography here, with several decent sources.
