Non-carbon life[edit]

Animal scenes[edit]

Since some viewers find the (simulated) lab animal death scenes in the movie to be upsetting, can we find an online source to cite about how those scenes were staged? The scenes of the animals convulsing in their death throes were done by flooding their immediate vicinities with carbon dioxide gas, displacing the normal air and inducing unconsciousness. There was always nearby a veterinarian to promptly revive the critter with bottled oxygen. Summary[edit]

No computer animations[edit]

The source given for the claim that the animation of the lab would be a 3D computer animation only says that it could "possibly" be so. I have the DVD here with a making-of documentary where Trumbull himself says very clearly that they didn't use a computer for that animation, but slit-scan photography. There was a 3D plastic model of the lab made, and that model was rotated in the dark via stop-motion in front of the slitscan camera, and that's how that animation was created. The *ACTUAL* and only computer effect in the film is that the camera movements of the microscope when trying to identify the "organism" were computer-controlled.
