Should we add a link to the source for the quote from Winfield Hill?

Cover Page Photo[edit]

Is there a picture of cover page for 3rd edition with proper licensing compatible with Wikimedia terms? Does anyone think if we should contact authors and ask for a cover page photo? These guys usually answer e-mails and would most probably provide a free photo of the cover page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ali Mirjamali (talkcontribs) 10:48, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First edition[edit]

When was the first edition published? The article doesn't say at present. Qwfp (talk) 08:03, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Third edition[edit]

The third edition of "The Art..." is probably the most rumored book publication since The Last Dangerous Visions. Is crystal-ball speculation appropriate here? --Wtshymanski (talk) 14:21, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we're into February 2011, and no sign of a 3rd edition. It's not even on B&N or Amazon as a pre-order any more. --John Nagle (talk) 20:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's coming out just after Knuth's 4th volume. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:25, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
According to The Art of Computer Programming

The first installment of Volume 4 (a paperback fascicle) was published in 2005. The hardback volume 4A was published in 2010. Additional fascicle installments are planned for release approximately biannually.

There's evidence it's on the way:
  • Cambridge University Press has listed the third edition in a "Physics 2011" brochure under the same ISBN 0521809266 that was floated earlier, giving this month (June 2011) as the publication date. Mind you, CUP US gave a February 2011 pub. date in a Fall/Winter 2010 brochure. :/
  • Amazon.com is once again (6 June 2011) listing the third edition, under ISBN 0521809266 as before. Now Amazon says it's in stock, with a "Usually ships within 1 to 3 months." delivery time, though it pretty clearly isn't.
  • On 20 May, someone on the EEVblog forum claimed to have emailed Winfield Hill about the book, and posted what he said were Hill's replies. Hill is reported to have said

We're working full-time on the 3rd edition, and are more than 2/3 through so far, and hope to see it out this year, although it may slip a bit.

The replies certainly look genuine; blog owner David L. Jones took them as such. Last July Jones himself reported receiving an email from Hill giving "Early next year we hope." as the target. Anyone want to contact Hill to confirm, and ideally get something that can be cited without reliability/RS wars? --RW Dutton (talk) 15:04, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Probably worth mentioning as a cited rumor, but since even the reported posting is vague, it's not too helpful. This is embarrassing. Even Duke Nukem Forever finally shipped. --John Nagle (talk) 15:49, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And here it goes again. It's 18 months away just like in 2006. --Wtshymanski (talk) 02:03, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
...and the number of transistors on a chip has doubled twice. Book publishing can't keep up with Moore's Law. We're still speclating on the months-off publishing date as we've been for eight years. --Wtshymanski (talk) 15:52, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That section probably should be rewritten as a history of the past predictions of delivery date, without the use of the future tense, per WP:CRYSTAL. John Nagle (talk) 21:30, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Someone just added that Amazon is accepting pre-orders. For the end of 2015. John Nagle (talk) 19:38, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see the rumor mill now has it coming out in September 2015, not March 2015. Could we just quit reporting rumors and wait till the third edition actually is published? Spreading rumors isn't really the mission of an encyclopedia. --Wtshymanski (talk) 15:36, 15 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My copy of the 3rd Edition arrived in the mail today -- April 7, 2015. SimpsonDG (talk) 20:14, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's actually out. There's even an errata page.[1] John Nagle (talk) 22:32, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
