The part in the article where it says there's an allusion to being rich and being mean ... I always took mean not to be a bully, but to be the middle. Walking in (or on) the middle of the road, so to speak.

Why has there been debate over which football team is being referenced in L Wells? The article states that she is from Liverpool - Alex said that she is a girl he knows in Glasgow, so isn't it pretty obvious that this is a play on words to cement the relations between Glasgow and Liverpool? If the 'men are singing You'll Never Walk Alone' to her, it's supposed to be them trying to charm her by playing on the Liverpool-Glasgow relationship. If you want to include something like "this is a reference to..." make sure you've got a reliable source, and include the source in the article (the link you provided in the edit summary returns a 404).
