Position in Eight Worlds timeline?[edit]

Human cloning isn't illegal during the 'present' time part of this book, yet during all of The Ophiuchi Hotline which ends soon before the Invaders will move to expel humans from the solar system, human cloning is illegal.

Do the 'present time' events in The Golden Globe occur before, during or after the events in Hotline?

John Varley says; "I know this will sound lame, but the answer is ... I really don't know. The books were written many years apart, and in the interim I had many new ideas which often contradicted earlier ones. Rather than be straitjacketed by the past, I decided to begin a sort of modified Eight Worlds, with no attempt to reconcile everything with the earlier stories. That became STEEL BEACH, THE GOLDEN GLOBE, and eventually IRONTOWN BLUES. In fact, I'm currently engaged on yet another series that COULD be seen as prelude to the Invasion (though it's not, really, it just seems like it). The fact is, I'm not Asimov or Niven, with the ability to rigorously remember all the details of everything I ever wrote and make it all fit together. My mind is not a steel trap. It's more like a swamp, and I just meander wherever it takes me.

Sorry I couldn't help.

John"
