Origin of the Song - George W. Johnson[edit]

The date of 1901 for the origin of this song may be incorrect. Archeophone's website indicates that it might have been earlier:

The Laughing Song—George W. Johnson (ca. 1894–98)

The website contains a brief extract of this song.

The article on George W. Johnson claims that "Some time between January and May 1890, Johnson was recruited" to record "The Whistling Coon". From this he went on to develop "The Laughing Song", and that "... By 1895, Johnson's two tunes "The Whistling Coon" and "The Laughing Song" were the best-selling recordings in the United States". The article also explains that becuse of the primitive recording technology, Johnson would have been constantly employed in making many such recordings - with Johnson singing "the same song over and over again in the recording studio fifty or more times a day".
