Most common/most notable?[edit]

This line: The Narrows is most notably the name of a strait in New York City separating Brooklyn and Staten Island. seems utterly Big Apple-centric. This may be the official name of the spot, but whether or not it is the most common meaning of this phrase is utterly dubious beyond the boundaries of the NY metropolitan region. I know of this spot as the Verazzano Narrows, which is probably (?) what's in USGS. This is probably not even the most common usage in American English beyond the environs of New York. I've made a similar comment on Talk:The Narrows and think that should be the disambiguation page, as the range of meanings in different countries, even in different regions of the United States, and in reference to the many "FOO Narrows" around the world, that it's highly presumptive to claim that the New York usage is the most common or the most notable.Skookum1 (talk) 05:12, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting one - there are umpteen "narrows" in Scotland (including those with a formal name in a non-English language) so none of them would ever be called "The Narrows" except in local as opposed to general usage as no-one would know which one you meant unless it was obvious from the context. It is thus possible that the NY Narrows is the best known "The Narrows" - although I must confess to never having heard of it before today and looking at the long list overleaf that might be hard to substantiate.
