The old vic[edit]

the old vic theater is in the waterloo area of london on the corner of the cut and waterloo road. The old vic bulidng is 200 yrs old. The old vic theater opened in 1818 as the coburg, and was then renamed the royal victoria in 1833,which was soon then known as the old vic. in 1914 Lillian baylis organised a company for the old vic to become a shakespearean repertory and in 9 yrs (1923) all shakespears worked had finally bben presented. After the death of lillian baylis the old vic was used for actor training, by directors such as michel st.denise

The New Theatre?[edit]

The section Wartime exile states (my emphasis):

In 1944, the company was re-established in London with Ralph Richardson and Laurence Olivier as its stars, performing mainly at the New Theatre until the Old Vic was ready to re-open in 1950.

”

What "New Theatre" is this? Presumably it's not the New London Theatre, as this only opened in '73, but there's no reference to a "New Theatre" elsewhere in this article to help explain things. Anyone know what's going on? Casper Gutman (talk • contributions) 21:23, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Old Vic → The Old Vic — Relisted. A quick Google search shows both forms being used, but no obvious runaway winner. So more discussion here would be nice. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:32, 25 July 2011 (UTC) Per email discussions with one of their employees, and their website, the theatre is referred to as 'The Old Vic'. Oppose. The addition of the definite article is unnecessary. I think most people would write "the Old Vic", not "The Old Vic". -- Necrothesp (talk) 22:33, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (definite and indefinite articles at beginning of name)#Rule of thumb. Would "The" be commonly capitalised in running text (i.e. would you write "I went to The Old Vic")? I would suggest it would not be and that most people would actually write "I went to the Old Vic". Support, the official website uses "The Old Vic" everywhere (except in relation to "Old Vic New Voices"), for example "Please be aware that there are no performances of Richard III at The Old Vic from Tues 26 Jul-Tues 2 Aug inclusive" and "Returns available from The Old Vic box office on the day of the performance." From the article titles guidance section: Avoid definite and indefinite articles: Do not place definite or indefinite articles (the, a and an) at the beginning of titles unless they are part of a proper name (e.g. The Old Man and the Sea) or will otherwise change the meaning (e.g. The Crown). Since this is part of the proper name of the theatre, I think that this would not prevent the article from changing to The Old Vic. Syrthiss (talk) 13:19, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Old Vic Theatre Company[edit]

Currently, Feb. 20, 2012, the article says, "The Old Vic Company was established in 1929...in 1963, The Old Vic Company was dissolved...In 2000, the production company Criterion Productions was renamed Old Vic Productions, plc...In 2003, actor Kevin Spacey was appointed as new artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company", but there is no Old Vic Theatre Company. This is confusing. Where did the company Kevin Spacy is director of come from?!? Nick Beeson (talk) 12:23, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
