Contradictory opening statement?[edit]

""The Picture in the House" is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft. It was written on December 12, 1920,[1] and FIRST published in the July 1919 issue of The National Amateur--[2] which actually was published in the summer of 1921.[3]"

First published half a year before it was written? And then later "actually" published half a year after being written. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.149.190.128 (talk) 02:37, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is correct. These amateur journals were frequently misdated. This issue was supposed to appear in July 1919, was still being worked on when Lovecraft submitted his story, and did not appear until 1921. 213.114.146.223 (talk) 14:32, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adaptations[edit]

The adaptation mentioned in the content is not the first known stage adaptation of the story. At least one is known prior to 2011. A short play was adapted from the story as part of a longer Halloween Night program staged in 1998 by Lakewood Community Theater in Lakewood, Washington. The characters and story were changed slightly; both the young protagonist and the old cannibal were written and portrayed as women. The protagonist was a vulnerable, defenseless young girl, and the cannibal was portrayed as a wrinkled old hag. The play ends with the relevation of the old woman's cannibalism, omits the saving thunderbolt, and implies that the young girl becomes the cannibal's next victim.
