space travel careers are: astronauts, the space scientists, and the people in the main base of the telecoms telling the astronauts what they're position is.

Okay, WTF! Is one of the unlamented jerk's relatives standing guard over this page?Kalaong (talk) 10:39, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

No, but please take care in your edits not to go beyond the plot and indulge in your own analysis. That's WP:OR.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:20, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
Hmm. Which part's my own analysis? The jerk goes back in time to cure RAH's tuberculosis, thereby keeping the man in the military instead of writing for science fiction magazines. Instead, "spec-fi" gets written in snooty literary magazines. So when he starts handing out Golden Fleece Awards, he's not browbeating geeks, he's pissing off yuppies! They boycott Wisconsin cheese, thereby driving "The Cheese Man" out of office as his milk price supports are considered "golden fleece". Without his interference, by modern times we have solar power satellites and a lunar colony. And Heinlein gets the Russians to pay their way to Mars with some extra nukes. What part's not in the story?

I'm sorry. This is one of my favorites, as it has a hypocritical jerk getting hoist by his own petard, AND science fiction getting some R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Kalaong (talk) 13:53, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

The whole part about yuppies and upper crust and so forth. While speculative fiction is much more mainstream in the story, I felt you were going a bit far and I didn't feel like breaking it down so far. And I'd question whether it is unnecessary detail. Incidently, I also like that it is sort of a backhand slap at Heinlein, that other authors would have done better than him. But edit again if you like, I won't wholesale revert again since you seem serious about the story.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:47, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
You could call it that - or you could say that he'd have been as amazing a soldier as he was an author. And a big problem science has to deal with is its gee-whiz roots - most see science as "Buck Rogers stuff". In the new timeline science is as respectable as theatre, and we have a real Buck Rogers to protect us. Kalaong (talk) 23:53, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
