Corruption

My local rag (this paper) has been implicated as part of the ongoing corruption in the whole of San Diego County (cushy relations between it and local devs, pension underfunding, etc). Does this have any place in a wikipedia article about it? FireballX301 03:56, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

If it received verifiable news coverage, sure. Feel free to add some info, as long as it's kept NPOV. -Colin Kimbrell 18:01, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

References section

I'm not sure what the entries in the references section had to do with anything, so I replaced them with the "references" tag. The article had the ref tags, but no references tag to actually display them. -- Hawaiian717 19:35, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

David Copley is a multiple DUI (driving under the influence) offender. He has been arrested and convicted (plea bargained) at least two times. Not sure if we can drag his name into "corruption" as he rarely goes to the "office." It should also be noted that even as the population of San Diego booms, the circulation of this paper plummets.

Editorials

"The newspaper is known to be "reliably conservative";[4][5] in 2008, the paper endorsed Republican party nominee Senator John McCain for president.[6] However, during the same election cycle, the newspaper also came out against Prop 8 and thus in favor of same-sex marriage.[7]"

Quoting from the opinion column does not mean the newspaper itself endorses anything. This needs to be changed. Kristamaranatha (talk) 17:25, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

I was WP:BOLD and did it myself. Kristamaranatha (talk) 17:27, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Prices Section

I don't know how to source this, but my copy now says 92 cents daily, rather than 75. MKale (talk) 03:30, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

'It refers to itself . . . '

"It refers to itself as the oldest business in San Diego County and the second-oldest newspaper in Southern California." Finding no sources, I am removing this from the cleaned-up version of this article which I am now preparing and will soon post. Sincerely, your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 22:02, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Should we change the name of this article to U-T San Diego?

The paper announced its new name, U-T San Diego, on January 3, 2012. (See: "To Our Readers" "San Diego Union-Tribune becomes 'U-T San Diego'" "San Diego Union-Tribune becomes U-T San Diego".) I added information and sources about this, but I didn't yet move the article to the new name because I wanted to see if there's consensus for that move, or whether there is some sense that the old name is still the more common name for the paper and should be retained for the time being. Comments? --Arxiloxos (talk) 00:31, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Gee, I guess so. Didn't realize that they did that.--JOJ Hutton 01:02, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
SOMEBODY changed the name! To me, rebranding the newspaper is not the same thing as an official name change. Also, the name of the paper as shown on the graphic is not the same as the name given in the text. The name of the article should reflect the name as it has commonly been used. Yours, GeorgeLouis (talk) 00:04, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
UT San Diego is the name listed at the top of the physical copy of the newspaper. Sorry if you didn't like that the head honchos who own the company decided to change the paper's name., but it's really not your call or mine. All we do is document the reliable sources. We can't help it if people don't agree with the name change. It's done, they changed their name officially. Write a letter to the editor if you feel they made a mistake, otherwise the name of this article must reflect the name of the company.JOJ Hutton 05:07, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't really care what they call it, but the flag at the top of the page plainly says "The San Diego U-T," not "U-T San Diego,"

Sincerely, your pal, GeorgeLouis (talk) 05:51, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

The picture on the article is older; I haven't personally held a physical copy of the new UT San Diego yet (need trip to San Diego now . . . ) but here's a picture from the Newseum website showing the current front page with the new name. I believe that the relevant policy for the article name is WP:COMMONNAME, i.e., "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." However, at this point I suppose there's some evidence that other reliable sources have already adopted UT San Diego as the common name. See e.g. this GNews search[1] Arxiloxos (talk) 18:52, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Name reverts to San Diego Union-Tribune

As of today, May 21, the name of the paper is reverting to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The article text has been adjusted to reflect that, and I will move the article title back to that name. Can anyone get a picture of the newspaper with that name on it, to replace the U-T San Diego image currently in the infobox? --MelanieN (talk) 21:53, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

@MelanieN: Shouldn't the page actually be moved to The San Diego Union-Tribune, as that's how the paper ID's itself on the front page? This is generally the standard way newspaper articles are "named" on wiki (e.g. The New York Times & The Washington Post vs. Los Angeles Times...). --IJBall (contribstalk) 19:54, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping. I'm surprised to see the use of "The" in these titles, but it does seem to be the style here if the paper itself uses it. I will move the article. --MelanieN (talk) 03:33, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
