Uh,Ive read it-and ,compresed to A3 format,it was just 60 pages long.Is that the edition with the "Red laugh" youre mentioning?

Yes. I got the page numbers from Amazon.com which also included the Red Laugh. A Google search on this book brings varying page numbers. One Google Book search says the book has 91 pages, while another one says the book has 194 pages. Which one of these three page numbers should be used? Cunard (talk) 16:38, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Historical fiction[edit]

Uhm,considering it follows the psychological torments and the mental strains of seven fictional people in a non specified time during imperial russia,writen at that period,Id rather call it psychological horror or something of the sort.Theres very litle to no realia, except finding out they shiped prisoners to scaffolds using trains. I don't agree at all. The story is not set 'in a non-specified time', but precisely in 1908, the time of writing, when the Tsarist government was executing opponents by the score. The work certainly concentrates on the psychological development of the characters, but the word 'horror' is wholly out of place: the writing is a masterpiece of precision, poignancy, and restraint. The message of the work is upbeat: the imminence of death can enable a new perception of the dignity of the human spirit and of the depth and humility of human love. RP, 24 Nov 2012.

The work is perhaps too short to be called a novel (even if in the first English printing it covered 190 pages), but with its division into twelve chapters, numerous episodes and large cast of characters it can't count as a 'short story'. It belongs to an intermediate genre (called 'Novelle' in German) which has no name in English. Best, perhaps, simply to call it a 'story'. RP, 24 Nov 2012.
