The Torch (St. John's University)The Torch – Even though the paper is a newspaper for St. John's University, it is too independent to the have the school's name in its title. In addition, Wikipedia common-styling and precedent shows have their own title that does not include the school's name-- see List of college and university student newspapers in the United States. • Response to above comments: Thank you for your replies and discussion. Under Torch (disambiguation) you can see that there is a small list of other things that "The Torch" phrase may point to. Unlike the obscure song from 1909, the 1950 Mexican small film, or the short-lived defunct XM radio station, The Torch newspaper has had steady readership among the thousands of St. John's University students, its wider base of alumni, and the much larger group of the Queens and overall New York City community. The Torch's readership is very high, its editors may would be willing to provide website and print statistics to Wikipedia administrators for additional justification. The Torch has been consistently writing and growing since its beginning 98-years ago. The archives available from St. John's University (http://digitalmemory.stjohns.edu/digital/collection/p17338coll1) show that the torch has been active for this length-- please note that the un-digitized versions of old issues are available on microfilm at the University. Lastly, to Mr. Anthony Appleyard above, The Torch is too well-established as the principal topic as noted that the other topics are marginal. To further prove this point: when one searches "John F Kennedy" in the Wikipedia search, they will be directed to the page of 35th United States president John F. Kennedy and not of incumbent Georgia State Senator John F. Kennedy. It is in that same spirit why "The Torch" should be the name of this page. Mehrpw (talk)
  • To me as a speaker of British English, the first meaning of "torch" is what Americans call a "flashlight", with oxy-gas torches running a close second. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:08, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Not the primary topic for The Torch. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:16, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Necrothesp, can you explain a further reason? Again there are only a few things actually called "The Torch" under the disambiguation. I would love to hear your thoughts about the arguments I made above as to why it is the primary topic. Also, Anthony, while I understand that the word "torch" stands for in British English, the paper is called "The Torch" in that it is a name for something. Please let me know your thoughts. For the above responses, please be aware that while the disambiguation page has things that relate to the word "torch", the ones that are actually called "The Torch" are very minor and not as significant as the paper. While you may not be familar with it, The Torch newspaper is significant enough to warrant it being considered the primary topic over those others. Mehrpw (talk) 15:22, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Adding the definite article is always a terrible way to disambiguate, as anything can have a definite article article added. It's definitely not the primary topic for Torch; it's questionable whether it's even the primary topic for The Torch. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:11, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you for the reply. I compeltely agree, this page does not deserve to be the primary topic for Torch, the primary argument here is that it is for The Torch. Again, the topics specifically named The Torch are next to insignificant compared to this one. Mehrpw (talk) 01:18, 24 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per above. The Torch (newspaper) makes more sense. -- Netoholic @ 02:51, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
