Cornell Campbell's involvment[edit]

I know he never recorded with the Uniques in the 60s. Some sources say he did, but no recordings have ever been released with both Slim Smith and Cornell Campbell. Will probably have to try and contact Campbell through friends and see if he can provide any insight.Upsetterfc 13:15, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Rough Guide and the Virgin Encyclopedia both state that he was a member, for what that's worth.--Michig 13:40, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that applies to 1977, not 60s. He never recorded with the Uniques, which is the standard used in Jamaica. But the Sensations was one of the vocal groups who also worked with Bunny Lee at the same time as the Uniques. Also, groups were frequently informally structured, so its possible that he "stood in" for someone when they weren't available. But I've never heard a rocksteady track from the Uniques (and I've heard 90%) with Cornell's voice. I think the only way to answer this will be to ask Cornell directly or find verifiable interview where he discusses it.Upsetterfc 13:58, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The Rough Guide says that "his Curtis Mayfield-tinged vocals, however, were even more suited to the romantic rocksteady era, when he was a member of the Uniques and the Eternals." Larkin says "he re-emerged in 1967 as a member of the Uniques". If Campbell himself states that he was not a member in the 60s, that should of course be taken as fact.--Michig 14:13, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There's an interview with Jimmy Riley here, which suggests Campbell was not a member, but there's an interview with Cornell here where Cornell says he was in The Techniques.--Michig 14:28, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now you get it. There is little written history. The difficult part is sorting out the facts from fiction from boasts from outright lies for personal gain.Upsetterfc 15:24, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All we can really do here is refer to sources that are considered reliable and attribute statements to those sources. Where people make claims that are dubious we can say they they 'claimed' or 'stated' something, rather than presenting it as a fact. If reliable sources state things that we disagree with, we need to find other reliable sources that disagree or put up with them.--Michig 15:55, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Read through the interviews. Both points revolve around the Techniques, the first vocal group Slim Smith was in. You're dealing with secondary school aged boys at that time. Possible Cornell participated, but hard to confirm unless you were there.Upsetterfc 16:14, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
