Story behind the story[edit]

In his autobiographical sketch "Lucky Break: How I Became a Writer", Dahl tells an anecdote which obviously refers to "The Way Up To Heaven", although he doesn't mention the story by name: "I was once driving alone on a country road and an idea came for a story about someone getting stuck in an elevator between two floors in an empty house..."
