Origin or similarity of design[edit]

In the 1990s many aspects of Russia's space program were bought by the PRC for use or for study in their own space program. Tianzhou is very similar to the Progress M2 that was in development shortly before the loss of facilities in Ukraine. Progress M2 was an elongated Progress supply craft of similar dimensions, also utilizing the same propulsion unit as its Soyuz counterpart, designed to be launched in an enlarged fairing using the Zenit launcher. It was seen as a second generation supply ship for the proposed Mir-2 space station. With an uncertain financial situation, and Zenit production lost to Ukraine, Progress M2 did not, ahem, progress further than 1993.
