Couldn't believe that TGR did not have a Wikipedia page so have set one up. Hope it's OK ChrisTheDude 22:10, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, fine! I added a missing item to the discography - Hillbilly Voodoo, the first Whitfield/Russell cooperation. Hope that's OK too. JanTheFolkFan

"he is also an artist...." Am I to assume that he is also a visual artist? A sculptor? What? Ventifax

TGR has painted some cover art of his albums (e.g. borderland) himself... --VeronikaMM 15:12, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious[edit]

I suspect that the birthdate is wrong. If Tom Russell went to Nigeria in 1969 after getting his master's in criminology, he would have been only 16 if born in 1953. I graduated from UCBerkeley in '69 and was born in 1947, so I suspect his birth year is more likely 1946 or 1947 unless he was a real child prodigy. There are no Tom or Thomas Russells listed in the California birth index born 5 Mar 1953, but there is one born in Los Angels Co. on 5 Mar 1946 (Thomas George Russell). Funnily enough I just logged on to make exactly the same point. The DOB listed is taken from his official bio and I strongly suspect it has been "massaged". Without a reliable source, though, it would be original research to assume that the TGR you discovered in the birth records is definitely him -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 08:23, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Note also that there's a seemingly semi-autobiographical song called "The Pugilist at 59" on his 2006 album - if he wrote it the year before he recorded it, he would indeed have been 59 if he was born in 1946 -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 13:56, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
.....and in one of his spoken word narrations on the "Hotwalker" album he specifically states that he was born in "the late 1940s"..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 08:26, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I saw him live in Nov, 2009. During show he mentioned meeting Bob Dylan in 1961, when he was 14, then immediately said "Don't do the math!" Taking the foregoing comments and "Pugilist at 59" into consideration one can conclude with some degree of certainty he was born 3-5-46. He looks great and sounds great at 63 and is one of the greatest songwriters ever. Harvey Jones —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.16.25.238 (talk) 14:41, 11 November 2009 (UTC) I have to agree: I saw him last year and he laughed at being the youngest criminologist in history and going to Africa when he was "14" ... 1946 seems the truth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pen-wu (talkcontribs) 18:55, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In a 2008 interview, Russell himself states "I was born down on Hope Street, downtown L.A., in the late 40s." and a 1997 Houston Chronicle article gave his age as 49, which (if accurate) would make his birth year either 1947 or 1948. -- Zyxw (talk) 15:04, 12 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Doobie. Us.[edit]

People, mother-jumping please, this man is alive and evidently in touch with at least one editor. Can we just get his correct birth year? What is with this debutant behavior about the man's age? Rainbow-five (talk) 03:06, 19 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian origin and categories[edit]

The article lists Origin as Canada, along with a number of categories, yet is unmentioned in the body of the article. This needs to be cited or removed in short order.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 23:44, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
