Tong isn't just a chinese surname. It can also be an English surname!— Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.195.2.53 (talk) 17:29, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tong is also an old English surname which can mean living by a fork in a road or river. Often old English surnames were mainly derived from places people lived or even their professions or characteristics. Some say that the name Tong may have been given to a shoemaker, because the shoes had a "tongue" or the family may have been known to talk a lot, or maybe to argue a lot. Names weren't often written down much in early British history, so through the oral traditions, pronunciation may have changed over time, OR we are hearing the original pronunciation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.239.63.196 (talk) 00:45, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It also might be good to look at some different sources of information. For example, the "Forebears" website explains that there are many origins of the name Tong, from many countries. There is some detail within this site about the supposed name origins, from Marathi in India, to China, Sudan and England. 1 https://forebears.io/surnames/tong#meaning — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.239.63.196 (talk) 00:56, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
