Origin of the word?[edit]

Any idea when this term came into use? To me it seems somewhat recent and coming from the GNU world. Anyone know? Billgordon1099 04:43, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure, but it's a useful concept, in software and in the history of civilization. You can't have metal tools without a forge of some kind, and you can't have a compiler without a bootstrap machine language. --BlueNight (talk) 19:31, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have nevr heard of this term either. I would agree that it's a GNU-related term.
