according to the AMS glossary [1] a tornado outbreak is defined as 10 or more tornadoes. But as to whether that has been made official or not, i'm not sure. Dr Denim 20:32, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is no singular or "official" definition. They're defined differently for different purposes, and also subject to modification because of changing nature of the tornado record (i.e. there are many more tornadoes reported in the last couple decades than previously). Definitions tend to agree that an outbreak must be at least 5-20 tornadoes generated from the same general storm system. That fits the idea of a tornado outbreak fairly universally. The Glossary of Meteorology definition is peer-reviewed and a reliable source; and it fits the articles definition well, but definitions can be refined to suit an authors purpose. Direct Conflict With Other Wikipedia Pages[edit]

That's not a contradiction, because the May 2003 total is the result of multiple tornado outbreaks comprising the outbreak sequence. Evolauxia (talk) 13:09, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Late-May 2011 is technically a tornado outbreak sequence, and thus should be compared to other outbreak sequences instead of other outbreaks. Many of these pages will likely need to be moved and retitled once this year's tornado counts are finalized so that they are properly categorized. W Scott Lincoln 22:57, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possible April 2019 Outbreak[edit]

I've been watching the weather a lot lately, and I've noticed a lot about this outbreak that might occur. I was kinda wondering if we should make a page about it or something (by the way, I'm new to the Wikipedia when it comes to editing). TerrariaInspectrE (talk) 21:08, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Per WP:CRYSTAL we do not create outbreak articles based on forecasts. An article will only be created if and when a major outbreak does occur. This usually happens after the outbreak when we start to get information on how severe the damage is. I've said in previous discussions, outlooks can be wrong and we cannot judge the significance of an outbreak or its worthiness for an article until it actually happens. On another note, the more relevant page to discuss any outbreaks this year would be Talk:Tornadoes of 2019. TornadoLGS (talk) 02:33, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

I think that the Tornado outbreak sequence article should be merged into the Tornado outbreak article. The content of "Tornado Outbreak Sequence" is brief and could be comprehensively explained within the context of the more extensive "Tornado Outbreak" article. The merger would help to avoid fragmentation of information about the topic across multiple pages. Moreover, it won't cause any article-size or weighting issues in the "Tornado Outbreak" article.
