A rewrite is due[edit]

"one mentalist said that you should slump in your chair and act as though you have drunk a bottle of gin."

who is this 'one mentalist', why is his quote relevant here? I see also little relevance in the specific link to 'ecstacy'. Trace as a state of consciousness (altered or not) should be expanded here, not limiting it to drug usage or hypnosis, trance is an 'everyday' state of mind we tend to fall into thru many activities.

I moved the text to Trance, and cut the mentalist line. It doesn't ring true and it's unreferenced. --sparkit (talk) June 28, 2005 05:30 (UTC)

Redirect[edit]

This is the first times I've seen a redirect on sa talk page! --sparkit (talk) June 28, 2005 05:34 (UTC)

I would really welcome some images on this page[edit]

And some spell checking! This is a lot of work for one session and I need sleep. Namaste in agape B9 hummingbird hovering 14:16, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "Trance and Health" section is completely wrong about alpha, theta, and delta states. Ironically, it disregards the other sections that articulate info on beta, alpha, theta, and delta states which are correct.
Unsigned comment. Why poke holes rather than assist in scholarship and beautification?

Just a guess, but most users who comment or seek this page are statistically more likely to be under trance states then normal or average pages, and as such both talk pages and the wiki page itself should probably be slightly more accepting of slight but well intentioned aberrations. No idea if this is helpful or not, but this is where googling "Trance Stance vs Theta Waves" brought me, its been 10 years since I was a wiki editor. (Does this still work?)

Good wiktionary page[edit]

Maybe move and split the parts relevant to each meaning?

Agreed. I'm going to tag it, then we can be WP:BOLD and clean the heck out of this thing. Part Deux 18:40, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's a mess, yes, but there's a lot more than a dictionary definition - I take it you plan to move the relevant parts and leave an article here, without most of the the definitional stuff. If that's your plan, I agree. --Chriswaterguy talk 15:10, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup[edit]

Yea this page is really messy and stuff and could use some work in format. I'm putting up a Cleanup tag. -Eridani 15:49, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh nvm, it seems it's had a cleanup tag since February...I couldn't see it at first for some reason... oh well. -Eridani 15:50, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New lead section could use some work[edit]

On 3 August I added a one-sentence lead section with edit summary "added a minimalist lead section since there is none; volunteer needed to expand it per WP:LEAD". Today's new lead section,

Trance is an arch categorical term to denote a variety of processes, techniques, modalities and states of mind and consciousness. Trance states may be induced or occur unbidden. Trance may be conflated with: meditation, play, magic, prayer and the former categorical terminology altered states of consciousness, which as it entails an inherent value judgement is no longer engaged in Consciousness Studies discourse.

seems overly complex and jargon-laden, as well as wandering off to deprecate the terminology altered states of consciousness. Somebody should rewrite this according to WP:LEAD, especially WP:LEAD#Provide an accessible overview. --CliffC 00:10, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I corrected the above entry to make clear that the WP:LEAD is the entire section before the first heading, not a single paragraph as it seemed to suggest. --CliffC 23:49, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology[edit]

Acronyms like F. and OF. makes this less understandable to a person that's not familiar with such acronyms. The section where they are should be cleaned up.

In Christian Rätsch's lecture (at Psychoactivity Conference in Amsterdam 1998) : Psychoactivity, The Fountain of Culture http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7140377893864168262 starting at 24minutes 30 seconds Rätsch explains shamanistic trance state. He says than in most languages of Nepal the word trance translates as shaking. This would seem to match with to shiver. Is it okay to reference this kind of lectures? Why not? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.173.208.102 (talk) 14:52, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Missing reference[edit]

When encountering sentences like "white noise has been scientifically documented to assist neural connectivity, creativity and problem-solving" there absolutely must be a linked scientifical reference. Encyclopedic content must be verifiable. Where is this document (and does it hold up to scientific standards)? 87.234.89.174 (talk) 04:18, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dennis Weir[edit]

I've added clarifications to his model based on reading some of his papers here http://www.trance.edu/drupal/node/26 but I have to say I don't think he is notable enough for inclusion and he is not a psychologist but a self described "meditation addict" and systems analyst for computers. He seems to have done a lot of research and started his trance institute but I get a big tin foil hat feeling from him and nobody in psychology seems to have heard of him or adressed any of his claims. One of the main problems I see is his insistence that trance limits cognitive function, yet the human mind never accesses all of its functions at once, in other words all states are at least some what "dissociated trance planes" including all forms of consciousness. He seems to insist that trances are the mind sheding articles of definition to reveal nothing underneath them. I don't know what I should do about this, if anything, or what I think about his theories. I'll keep digging but so far I don't think many people take him seriously. Kamitian trance[edit]

"I" am reading The Meter Neter Volume 1(The Great Oracle of Tehuti and the Egyptian System of Spiritual Cultivation) by Ra Un Nefer Amen. He writes about how trance was/is a major element to Kamitian (Eygptian Religious Practices) but on this topic of Trance, nothing is refer to or mention about it. Why? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Goody68 (talkcontribs) 20:27, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

references[edit]

I would like to see the references cited at their appropriate places in the article. Is it possible for the users who added these to do this as it's pretty confusing at the moment? Thanks. Sud Ram (talk) 09:27, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Real Trance?[edit]

This entire article reads like a mixed jumbo of spiritual nonsense. Is there any evidence to support the idea that trance states really exist? In any form? If so, this article should primary revolve around a scientific and medical analysis of the state with its uses in spirituality and alternative medicine as a side note. If not, it should clearly present it as just an idea used in many forms of spirituality but that medically ″—−÷×there is no evidence to support the idea. Passing off the ideas that this is some sort of real magic thing is inappropriate for an encyclopedia. 118.209.55.181 (talk) 11:09, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stuff (again)[edit]

This page is, like, just full of stuff, man. That someone has decided is vaguely relevant, like, or like they kind of heard some guy down the pub said h±÷→is brother's cat had told him. There is far too much of it to fact-tag it all; I'm just going to rip stuff out, if I can be bothered. Like William M. Connolley (talk) 22:54, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Obsolete definition"?[edit]

The etymology section currently states "Trance in its modern meaning comes from an earlier meaning of "a dazed, half-conscious or insensible condition or state of fear", via the Old French transe "fear of evil", from the Latin transīre "to cross", "pass over". This definition is now obsolete." Is it really obsolete to use it in that sense? I'm sure I've heardit used that way not too long ago, the cited source doesn't actually say its obsolete, and this source also seems to support the general "dazed, half-conscious or insensible condition" meaning. Iapetus (talk) 23:56, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bad Article because it is a Meaningless Word[edit]

It's an amazingly vague and meaningless word. As a result, the page about it is a mess of vague and meaningless sentences.

Since it is by definition SUBJECTIVE, then it cannot be verified and in fact, it is impossible to say that any two people have experienced the same thing that they might call "trance". 162.205.217.211 (talk) 23:45, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Essay tag[edit]

I tagged the trance states section. The other unsourced sections in this article have similar flaws. I'm not sure how much of this is salvageable, so at least trance states and trance induction and sensory modality may need complete rewrites.HansVonStuttgart (talk) 20:10, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This article is messy and biased.[edit]

We know that trance is the core of Shamanism and this is the oldest example, yet the article barely makes any mention of it and devotes itself to talking about a system of divination attributed to Greeks that in no way relates to trance, and even cites ethnonationalist propaganda about "Viking shamans" that has not a shred of evidence and is based on literally nothing. TotallyHonestAnglo (talk) 11:53, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Trance states" section[edit]

At least some of the "Trance states" section appears to be lifted word for word from a comment on this Amazon page. I'm too out of practice to remember what WP rules say about it, but given that the section is already tagged, I'd be tempted to remove the entire thing.
