The citation needed template[edit]

What is meant by the {{citation needed}} template? If it's simply a demand for a source, then it should be at the end of the sentence. If it means that it's colonialist to refer to a place as discovered by a European if it was known to natives before, then {{citation needed}} is the wrong template.
