Treasure: a recurring article (title, cannot recall) designed to teach reading[edit]

Treasure had a page that was created to assist in the process of learning to read. It used icons in place of key words. Clearly, the parent was supposed to read with the child and when the icon appeared in the sentence, the parent would prompt the child to give the name of icon, eg. book. As far as I know this was the first publication to make use of icons as an alternative to a word in this way. Does anyone know who created this page in Treasure and in particular who came up with this idea?

When I bought the Microsoft Operating System, Windows 95 in 1995, I was immediately struck by the familiarity of the icons. They were drawn in the same way as they were in Treasure, the same palette, size, style and comic appearance. It would be of historical interest to know if the people at Microsoft got their inspiration from Treasure.
