Wow. Someone's a genius. You'd think if they were going to take pictures of their Wal-Mart toys, they could have at least made sure all the decals were on rightside up...--69.44.6.88 04:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey genius, those pictured on the article are actual props used on TNG, not toys. The decals don't matter as the display wouldn't be shown up close on that; they'd use a master 'hero' version for that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.38.128.89 (talk) 2006-10-18 — David Spalding Talk/Contribs

Fair use rationale for Image:Tricorders.jpg[edit]

Image:Tricorders.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Series-specific[edit]

Removed the "isolinear chips" statement from the opening paragraph as this was only in the later series. TOS used "transtators" as their computing Wundertech. --Noclevername (talk) 14:49, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Cooper[edit]

The tricorder prop for the original Star Trek series was designed and built by Wah Ming Chang, one of several futuristic props he created under his contract. Some of his designs are considered to have been influential on later, real-world consumer electronics devices. For instance, his communicator inspired Martin Cooper's research on mobile telephony.

I fixed the weasel words here, but the logic here is not quite satisfactory: the communicator's visual design did not inspire Martin Cooper—he was inspired by its functionality. Do we have better examples?

Roddenberry's contract[edit]

This article mentions a clause in Gene Roddenberry's contract with Desilu which allowed any company who actually created a Star Trek device to use its name. This is also stated on the Star Trek wiki Memory Alpha's page on tricorders. However neither this article nor MA's article give a reference and I can't find any primary sources for it. Does anyone know where this story comes from? It certainly has the ring of truth to it (sounds exactly like something Roddenberry would have done) but a source is needed. --87.82.207.195 (talk) 21:58, 21 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of Star Trek tricorder?[edit]

Came to page looking for info about tricorder in Star Trek, specifically pictures.

Did not find such pictures. A picture of George Takei showing just the back of a tricorder prop is not helpful. No idea what it looks like.

A picture of Sulu using a tricorder would be useful if we could see the tricorder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.8.98.142 (talk) 20:56, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
