Reason for contesting deletion of the article[edit]

Turnpike has a substantial user base, and is a well-designed and well-implemented package.

My guesstimate is that there are at least 50,000 Turnpike users, the great majority of them in the UK. (The ISP Demon a few years ago had over 200,000 customers, and a conservative estimate would be that 25% of them use Turnpike.) Looking at the "User-Agent" headers of articles posted to Usenet newsgroups, and particularly those within the uk.* hierarchy, will show that many newsgroup posters use it.

Thus the number of people interested in the article will be substantial. Many other specialised articles on Wiki will be of interest to fewer people that that.

I have no connection with Turnpike other than as a satisfied user.

I still fail to see how it meets Wikipedia:Notability (software). Can someone explain to me please how it is noteable? MECU≈talk 21:46, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It meets criterion 1, in that there have been full length reviews in UK computer magazines. Also the number of full-featured Internet email and news packages with a substantial user base is small enough, that I would argue that any such package is notable. In any case, this is at present all moot, since the Notability requirement is at present only a proposal and is yet to be adopted. JH 17:06, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dunno howwe've got to needing these 'last-ditch' defences, since in a UK-context it was clearly 'notable', but worth saying that in its time it also provided a useful test-case for wine, used by me and others. In essence, if Demon ISP is worth noting, (which it is, because of its historical role in UK), so is its main user-software release.Linuxlad 21:48, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The software is in current use[edit]

I noted a mention in the article edits of the software possibly being defunct. I don't know whether there is a user-group forum anywhere, but for what it's worth, I am a current user of the software, running it on WINE on Ubuntu Linux on a 64-bit PC.
