I guess the column pewter means just the 4th rank. However is there indeed a pewter medal? Does that mean a certain qualification? ...or why is it listed here? Can somebody please explain this to me? Thank you Uwe Langer (talk) 17:46, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • The US Nationals podium has four steps: 1st (gold), 2nd (silver), 3rd (bronze), and 4th (pewter). The fourth place finisher receieves a pewter medal and is called the pewter medalist. Here are last year's pairs medalists. Amanda Evora (on the left) has a pewter medal. And here's the junior men's podium with all four medals visible. • As far as I can determine, the USFSA began to award pewter medals at qualifying competitions in the 1988 season. Podium photos in Skating magazine from the 1987 season regional/sectional qualifying competitions show the 4th place finishers standing on or next to the podium, but without medals; while those from the 1988 season clearly show all the 4th place finishers wearing medals. Similarly, I saw no 4th-place finishers in the podium shots from ABC's telecasts of 1986 and 1987 Nationals, but the telecast of 1988 Nationals showed Jeri Campbell on the podium wearing a medal. Unfortunately, I do not have a rulebook from the 1988 season to verify the change, nor can I find a mention of the rules change in Skating magazine. Of the rulebooks I have in my collection, pewter medals for 4th-place finishers are specified in the 1990 rulebook, but not 1970 or 1960. In any case, pewter medals were pretty clearly not being awarded for the first 70+ years that the US Championships were being held, so 4th place finishers from those years should not be referred to as "medalists" or "pewter medalists". Correct Name - U.S. Figure Skating Championships[edit]

The correct name for this event is the "U.S. Figure Skating Championships". It is not the "United States Figure Skating Championships". Please see here, first page, first item. Jcflnj (talk) 00:55, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
