Only US Navy ship named after a foreign capital?[edit]

The article states "USS Canberra is the only USN warship named for a foreign warship or a foreign capital city." However, this does not appear to be fully accurate, since the USS Tarawa is named for the Battle of Tarawa, which took place on Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati. My understanding has always been that rather than being named after the city, USS Canberra was named after HMAS Canberra which was sunk in support of US forces at the battle of Guadalcanal. - Nick Thorne ^talk 11:13, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

For what it's worth, I have an old cruise book from my Dad's time on board the Canberra. This is a quote from the cruise book for the 1956 recommissioning and shakedown cruise, “In 1943 a United States cruiser was in the ways of the shipyard at Quincy, Massachusetts. PITTSBURGH was to be her name, but, when the sacrifice of our Australian allies became known by American, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered that she should be called the CANBERRA. It was the first time that the name of a city outside our borders had been used for a ship of the U. S. Navy...” I found that while trying to find a reference to cite for the ship's motto being the Can-Do Kangaroo. I have found one reference in a speech by the Capt. in the cruise book where he says, "By you loyalty and your untiring devotion to duty, given so generously, you have earned the name of 'Kan-Do Kangaroo.' My 'WELL DONE' to each and every one of you is from the bottom of my heart." WayneyP (talk) 22:55, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
