My father was a soldier being transported by the USS Fundalach on its way to retake the Philippines. It was hit by torpedoes from a Japanese Submarine and my dad was blown from the ship. Several hours later he awoke to find he was suffering a head wound and that he was on a banana boat with several hundred men that were injured also. He was told by others that he had been pulled from the ocean and rescued by local fishermen. The boat took them to the New Haberrdees islands to a medical facility ran by the Australians. My dad was fitted with a metal plate over the hole in his skull and was rejoined with the 6th Army in the Philippines. He had been told by others that the USS Fundalach had sunk.
